The Automation and Controls Engineer reports to the CPO. This position requires working closely with Plant Operations, Maintenance and Engineering. Equipment troubleshooting during downtime events and enhancements to existing controls will be the focus. An understanding of integrated control architectures and associated job change concepts is required. A strong ability to enhance HMI alarm descriptions to enable operators and maintenance personnel to quickly determine root cause of source. Analysis of various network topologies will be required to troubleshoot intermittent problems.

Essential Functions:
  • Program AB SLC 500 series controllers using RSlogix500.
  • Program AB MicroLogix series controllers using RSlogix500.
  • Program AB ControlLogix and CompactLogix series controllers using RSlogix5000 and Studio 5000.
    • PLC programming concepts
      • Relay & Sequencer instructions
      • DH+ Messaging
      • ControlNet Communications
      • Ethernet Messaging
      • Ethernet produced and consumed tag communications
      • User Defined Data Types
      • Alarm Instructions
  • Program AB Panelviews using Factory Talk View Studio Machine Edition.
  • Change AB Power Flex 4, 525 and 70 drive parameters and change schematics for:
    • Digital & Analog Speed ref
    • Relay Output Run/Fault signals
    • Safe Torque Off E-Stop
  • Ability to update and create Cad electrical drawings based on actual wiring of equipment using AutoCad or Draftsight..
  • Familiar with single and dual channel safety circuits.
  • Configure Network Address Translation Router AB 1783-NATR.
  • Tests, maintains and modifies existing systems.
  • Analyzes data and findings in written reports.
  • Applies data collection and statistical methods to improve manufacturing processes
  • Manages equipment change events and small projects to deliver new work instructions, breakdown reduction, root cause analysis and risk assessments.
  • Works closely and effectively with supervisors and managers to understand and improve existing machinery and production processes.

Job Requirements:
  • Associates degree in Electrical Technology or Technical Certification for Automation and Controls Programming.
  • Three years’ experience in automation and controls in a manufacturing environment;
  • Three year’s hands-on experience with Allen Bradley and Rockwell Automation products and systems.
  • Experience with Factory Talk Batch or equivalent batching system preferred.
  • Industrial equipment knowledge including experience with automation/controls, PLC hardware/software, (Contactor, VFD and Servo motor controls), PNP and NPN Sensors, Electrical systems 480Vac, 115Vac and 24Vdc, Pneumatics and Hydraulic controls.
  • Solid understanding of computer programming and software development
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Experience IsaGraph programming preferred.
  • Experience with Kinetix 5500 servo drives is preferred.
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation Asset Centre is preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge and compliance experience with OSHA, NFPA 79 and environmental regulations.
  • Proven creative thinking, problem solving and team building skills
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, a combination of day and evening shifts, as the needs of the business dictate. Saturday work is required to analyze and upgrade equipment while it is not in use by production. Typically, every other Saturday, production schedule permitt

Working Conditions: Some processes generate noise requiring the use of hearing protection; eye protection may be required. Occasionally requires working from heights of fifteen feet above ground. Troubleshooting and maintenance activities can involve crawling, bending, reaching, stooping, climbing, pushing and pulling. Wire tracing in electrical control panels will be required to verify and update electrical schematics. Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds is required.
