THE CREAM OF THE COFFEE CROP

A CULTURE OF COFFEE

Nestled in a cosy commercial row of shops in Taman OUG, Kuala Lumpur, The Hub is very much a labour of love for barista and founder Nicholas Tay. Opened in October 2015, The Hub’s exclusivity will capture the attention of any discerning coffee fans with its offerings. From specially-ordered coffee to rare wholesale beans, the colourful cafe has enraptured customers for its reputation as not just a cafe, but as a haven for its premium-tiered coffee. Inspired through the discovery of Geisha coffee beans, Tay’s collection grew as fervently as his penchant for premium-tiered beans. Whether his customers are in the mood for washed, processed coffee or naturally-processed coffee, there is a brew suited for everyone who walks in.

Tay credits The Hub’s success to its localised roasting methods, catered especially for the Malaysian palate, with The Hub positioning itself as a strict judge for only the best brews and blends. Priding himself on his selection, Tay meticulously screens the beans that enter his establishment with an eagle eye, opting and personally securing the cream of the coffee crop. The Hub’s most recent procurement includes a minor lot of Costa Rica beans – the only lot of its kind to be brought into Southeast Asia. To cap this off, specialised Japanese instructors are brought in annually to utilise the cafe’s extensive range of high-quality coffee and rotary evaporator, the first in Malaysia.

Fondly dubbed the “rotovap” for short, it produces an evaporated milk that, when mixed into drinks, sets an entirely different standard with a smoother and creamier texture, sans the sugary finish. When added to milk-based coffees, its unique blend with exclusive brews proffers an experience that would be difficult to replicate elsewhere. However, what truly makes The Hub first-rate is not just their beans or gadgets, but its human elements. Though their drinks are top-grade, their prices remain affordable for the average caffeine consumer, and often come with barista recommendations based on the customer’s taste. A testament to quality and passion, The Hub seamlessly blends its status as premium connoisseur with a distinct personal touch.
